Alfa Romeo Giulia Super 2.0

A Rare UK RHD Alfa Romeo Giulia Super 2.0

Almost unbelievably, hot on the heels of the last UK delivered RHD red Giulia Super 2.0 we have another in stock! So, for those who missed out last time here’s a lucky second chance.

This very tidy example has been in the same ownership since 2014, that of Chris Taylor ex-Alfa racer, serial Alfa owner and long-term owner of the late lamented Mithril Racing based at Goodwood.

Having long had a hankering for a Super to join his small fleet of classics he jumped at the chance to buy this one as she had the Q-car looks of a standard Super, but with the rather nice addition of a 2.0 engine and LSD rear axle from a 2000 GTV fitted making this quite the little performance saloon. Being a ‘user’ of his cars, rather than letting them sit in the garage the fact that she wasn’t a show queen also fitted the bill well.

Her ring bound history file includes an letter from Marco Fazzio, then in charge of Alfa Romeo Centro Documentazione  stating that she left the factory on 28th September 1971 and was sold to Alfa Romeo UK London on 29th September 1971 in Alfa red with black Skai interior, a colour scheme she still wears to this day.

The history also documents a large quantity of invoices dating back to 2007 totaling some £8947.47. The key invoices here start in 2009 with all work listed carried out by well known Alfa specialists Sunnyside Garage:

  1. Removal, strip & rebuild of gearbox with new bearings & synchromesh on 2nd gear.
  2. New Koni adjustable shock absorbers all around.
  3. Removal, strip & rebuild of prop shaft with new universal joints.
  4. Complete strip & rebuild of front & rear suspension with new ball joints and bushes.

Next came the rebuild and fitting of the 2.0 engine in 2012. This work included:

  1. New complete piston & liner set.
  2. Big end & main bearings replaced.
  3. New oil pump.
  4. Tab washer set.
  5. New top & bottom timing chains.
  6. Full gasket set.
  7. New water pump.

In addition to the engine upgrade and rebuild some maintenance and upgrade work was carried out at the same time, as follows:

  1. New front brake discs, callipers & pads.
  2. Supply & fit of 2.0 LSD rear axle.
  3. Strip and rebuild of interior heater fan assembly.

Having got hold of his ‘ideal spec’ Super Chris continued to enjoy using her extensively and regularly, including a 4-up trip to Italy, over the next 5 years. However, by 2019 it was apparent that bubbling around the lower areas of the car needed attending to. Being great friends with his old work colleague Chris Snowdon the car was booked in to have this attended to, however as so often is the case with these things the work ended up being rather more extensive than planned requiring the replacement of:

  1. Outer, middle & inner sills on both sides.
  2. New wing bottoms to both front & rear wings.
  3. New rear wheel arches and repairs to inner arches as required.
  4. New lower front valance panel.
  5. Localised floor pan repairs.
  6. Trim off, lights out repaint of both side, lower front & rear panels of the car.
  7. Dinitrol under body & cavity wax protection.

This work is documented with a photo file showing the extent of new panels fitted, rust removed and paintwork.

Almost straight after completion she starred as a cover feature car in the December 2021 issue of Auto Italia magazine. A copy of this is in the history file, along with various excellent condition period sales brochures, the aforementioned invoices and various other pieces of documentation including old MOT’s dating back to 1975.

In summary this particular Giulia Super represents an excellent opportunity to get into a well maintained ‘ready to use’ example that presents very well and has had the usual UK rust issues properly taken care of.
