Description

Whenever the subject of old Alfa Romeos comes up so often the response I get is ‘I used to have an Alfa Romeo Alfasud when I was a in my teens/twenties’. They evoke so many memories for true petrol heads, combining fine handling, peppy performance from the characterful, raspy flat four and good looks in Ti version with the lovely ‘pepperpot’ alloys and very ’80’s bodykit. However, due to their renowned propensity to dissolve it’s rare to find them today.

This particular Sud is the most desirable version, being a late 1.5 Ti Green Cloverleaf. First registered in August 1983 she is unusual for a 40 year old car in that she has a comprehensive A4 history file dating back to 1985, documenting work done, MOT’s back to 1991 that confirm the low mileage of 61k and even an RAC pre-purchase inspection report dated 8th April 1992. Also present is the original Alfa Romeo book pack with owners manual and service coupon booklet.

With the current Sud fanatic owner since 2005 this is not the first time he has owned this car, such is how they get under your skin. He originally bought her in the late 90’s, before selling on a couple of years later. The next owner put her through a light restoration in 2004 with an Alfa specialist in Shropshire, before selling her back to her current owner the following year. Although she has had some welding done underneath following since the restoration the exterior still presents nicely 18 years on.

Having only covered around 1000 miles in the past 12 years she has received ongoing maintenance to keep her in good running order throughout that time, the latest work being a carb tune, set of plugs and MOT in June this year.

Overall she presents very nicely, though is not perfect with a few minor imperfections in the 2004 repaint. The engine bay is very tidy with signs of well executed repairs to the notorious inner wing top area on both side, finished as it should be in the body colour. The often saggy and faded plastic body kit is in superb order, with none of the usual discolouration or warping usually associated with these cars and very much adds to the well cared for appearance of the car.

The underside has a good, but not too thick, coating of a wax based under seal and shows no sign of any impending work required.

The wheels are in excellent condition having been restored.

The interior is in lovely condition, an area that never wore well on the Sud. The red Ti carpets and seats are in very good condition and the dash is excellent with no cracks apparent.

To drive she is, as you would expect of a well maintained Sud, a joy! The engine pulls well with a lovely rasp from the near new & correct spec twin tailpipe exhaust, there are no synchromesh issues with the gearbox and the change is as sweet as you would hope.

A sharp looking and imminently useable Sud, after a long period of relative inactivity she is now eager to find a new home and get back on the road where she belongs!
